Start this trail (STF Tourist Station)

This 2-kilometer audio-guided walk follows the railway and road that connect Abisko village with the STF Tourist Station. In the summer, this short route is filled with bright flowers, interesting plants, and many bumblebees. Take a moment now to listen to these instructions before you set off.

A human landscape

It is easy to think of this Arctic landscape as a wilderness, and that it is untouched by humans. But, this isn’t true. People have lived in these mountains for over 6,000 years. Image: Elisa Ferrari

Birds

There’s a great rock just off the path if you’d like to stop to sit for a moment. Have you heard any birds while you’ve been in Abisko? Every year, the mountain birch forest is also great habitat for visiting birds.

Bees

There are many different bumblebee species of different sizes around Abisko. Bumblebees play a vital role in this arctic ecosystem as pollinators for many of the specialist plant species, and they also rely on these flowers for food to be able to survive and reproduce.

Fireweed

You might be able to see some tall, bright pink flowers. These are from a hardy plant known as fireweed that often lines this pathway during the summer months. To find out more about this plant and why it thrives around Abisko, here’s botanist Leif Bersweden.

The Research Station

You’re outside the Abisko Scientific Research Station. Each year around 200 scientists from around the world spend time at the station, conducting fieldwork and researching life in this Arctic landscape.
