Georg Kafka was a young poet and writer imprisoned in the Theresienstadt ghetto. He wrote Segen der Nacht here in 1944: an intimate, searching poem in which darkness, faith and the presence of God become intertwined. This recording places Kafka’s words within the hidden prayer room created by Artur Berlinger — a small space of worship concealed within a courtyard in the ghetto. In September 1944, Kafka was deported from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz with his mother, whom he chose to accompany when she was selected for transport.
