Collaborative project by students in Cleveland Institute of Art's "Time Based Media" class, Fall 2020.

Demo sound walk using the Echoes software, for Cleveland Institute of Art. Sound sources include recordings of open-air markets, birds, and frogs, originally recorded in Cleveland and Mexico by Bob Drake.

Sonambient: Chapters is a sound art installation inspired by Harry Bertoia's "Sonambient" sound sculptures, transforming the Arb into a dreamlike soundscape. Listen as poetry, bat calls, singing bowls, and other sounds fade in and out depending on your location. Designed and composed by Julia Mills. Official showings will be May 7th/9th from 4-7pm, and May 10th/11th from 7-10pm. Come explore for as long as you like!

I chose to create a soundtrack that reflects the peaceful yet vibrant atmosphere I experience as a student walking across campus in the morning. I find that the early hours on campus are often calm and serene, with the gentle sounds of nature blending seamlessly with the subtle buzz of campus life. To capture this mood, I incorporated the soothing sound of the flute, which I feel perfectly embodies both peace and enthusiasm. The flute's bright, airy tones evoke a sense of optimism and calm, setting the tone for the day ahead. I also integrated other sounds commonly heard on campus, such as the soft murmur of students chatting, the rustle of leaves in the wind, and the distant hum of passing traffic. These elements add a layer of realism and connection to the environment, grounding the piece in the everyday moments that make walking through campus such a unique and enjoyable experience. The combination of peaceful melodies with these natural campus sounds creates a soundtrack that reflects both the tranquility and the lively energy that coexist in this space each morning.
