Aimyhtixela

room 6 ECHOES

Location: Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia

Alexithymia - meaning “a person’s inability to identify or verbally describe his or her feelings.”. “Aimyhtixela” is the reverse of that. This sound experience is based off the “Junto Institutes” emotional wheel. The Junto Institute’s research explains how self awareness is the foundation to building empathy, healthy relationships, social awareness, self management and emotionally intelligent leadership. Grab a pair of headphones, scan the QR code to the ECHOES App, and be guided to follow a labyrinth of emotionally driven pieces, to bring you back to your centre. This interactive sound experience is a journey of getting to know, understand, feel and experience emotions. The intention is that the listener moves towards the emotion that they are feeling, and then after meeting the emotion - moving towards the balancing emotion, so then they can slowly come back to their centre. This sound experience is represented as a spiders web - with the middle of the web being the centre point of balance. Interoception (the ability to notice and understand your intental sensations) is the foundation to emotional regulation. Understanding when you are becoming angry, sad, anxious, happy etc... is imperative to knowing how to manage emotions proactively. (Goodall, 2020). Practicing interoception will help you stay connected to your sense of self, and engages the vagus nerve (which allows you to "calm down". (How Trauma Affects Our Eighth Sense: Interoception, 2024) Consistent practice can guide the plasticity of the brain to create and strengthen interoceptive-aware brain connections (Ahissar, 2009).

Augmented Reality Sound Walk

Augmented Reality Sound Walk

This sound walk is based around the sights and sounds you would encounter when going through the Burleigh Headland. I have chosen to mix a variety of the common sounds you would encounter when walking the track including natural elements such as trees blowing in the wind, birds calling and animals moving through the bush. These sounds are combined with human elements as the headland is a very popular destination for runners, walking and getting to the beach so I felt as though it was important to include noises as such.

Decolonising public space, a look at Burleigh Heads NP

This walk aims to start a conversation around our Indigenous past, present and future and to begin to shift the paradigm when we think about our public spaces. Along the walk today you’ll explore the history of Jellurgal, informed by Indigenous perspectives and narrated by Gamilaroi man Tristan Schultz. NOTE: each echo is spatially arranged to allow for reflection; either at its initial trigger location, or between. Use this time to ruminate and enjoy your surrounds. I acknowledge and pay respect to the Yugambeh people of the Gold Coast and all their descendants both past and present.
