An audio walk for Daugavgrīva Fortress in Riga, Latvia and Håøya island in Norway: two stories, one shared choreography, one memorial archive. The audio walk builds upon a research of the history, stories and materiality of three sites: Daugavgrīva Fortress, Haoya island and Famagusta “ghost city” in Cyprus - all of which are abandoned territories in which nature is gradually taking over their complex histories. The work “Hands will warm the fading stars' is an audio walk, a journey of reflection ablot the space and the listeners presence in it. When researching the fortress as a space and as a story, one is confronted with the fullness of life, that occurs where decay and flourish, past and future meet. A walk about how you enter a space. Who are you when you enter? Who are you to the space? How do you enter a space as a visitor and how as an intruder? Do you listen, when you enter a space? What if there’s no way left to go? Is a dead end a dead end? A fort is a structure of fortified defence against any enemy or intruder. An intruder is someone who aims to enter a foreign space and aims to pass through the lines of defense. In time, the Daugavgrīva sea-fort has lost its military significance and its ramparts are no longer wholly impenetrable. Historic roads are gradually disappearing under sand and new layers of growing vegetation, creating a dead end for roads of the past, but is a dead end a dead end, can a dead end be bypassed? Yesterday, I found a broken window made of glass blocks, and I took one block, which resembles a beautiful ice cube. I wanted to take this element and save it as an artifact of this site. One side of the glass was with the concrete, so I decided to remove it. During the process, an unexpected thing happened – the glass cube broke and lost its shape. The whole piece turned into many small elements and I felt like a vandal of this place, continuing the act of destruction, what is not good. At the same time I got a beautiful sound material.
