Life, Panera, and Desires

Life, Panera, and Desires

Life is about the variety of elements that are meant to either test our human well-being to see if we're capable of handling desires, or be eaten up. For this reason, I've taken these realities into a poem that I have composed alongside a collection of natural sounds that are specific to the sidewalk next to the Red Cedar River, facing Panera Bread inside the Minskoff Pavilion, which is on the opposite bank of the river.

Red Cedar River Walk

Red Cedar River Walk

The Red Cedar River Walk draws upon art, science and technology to foster a deeper connection between people and the natural environment through sound. A combination of field recordings of river systems and lakes in the Great Lakes Basin, interviews and electro-acoustic compositions are assigned specific GPS coordinates along each side of the Red Cedar River, from Beal Street to Farm Lane, using the Echoes.xyz app (https://echoes.xyz). After downloading the app, people can walk along the river and listen as they pass each GPS coordinate. The app is free for both iPhone and Android users. Advancements in technology – specifically mobile devices – have further separated us from the natural environment, even when we are outside. The River Walk attempts to reconcile this separation through sound by using cell phones as the medium to access the recordings. In this way, technology is repurposed as a tool to connect rather than one to distract. We cannot remove ourselves from the environments that surround us. By encouraging members of the MSU community to open their ears to the sound of water across the globe, the River Walk aims to remind people of the significance of our most precious natural resource and to offer a new perspective on the importance of listening to the world around us.

Bird Hills Nature Area Music Hike

Bird Hills Nature Area Music Hike

This hike through the Bird Hills Nature Area is approximately 2.3 miles/1.5 hour-long, moderately trafficked, and labeled as moderate intensity. The music for this hike is comprised of artists that were slated to perform during the Ann Arbor Summer Festival 2020 season. We encourage you to check out more of their music and support local artists! A few notes: 1. If you arrive at the end of a blue zone, pause and wait for the song to end. 2. There may be gaps in the music. That is okay. Enjoy the silence if it happens. 3. If songs begin to overlap, you can pause the walk, re-start it, and this will correct the issue. If all else fails, stop the walk in the app and re-open it, you should still be able to pick up wherever you are on the walk. 4. To view the playlist, tap on the menu button in the upper right-hand corner while in the hike. This soundwalk is supposed to tap into the sublime, as we are not actually in the experience itself, but are listening as if we were.
