The four essential elements required for model yachting are: technical (design and build), tweaking (setting up the standing rigging), trimming (sails), and tactical (wind awareness and course selection). These four T’s are practised and polished assiduously by the almost exclusively male membership that pursues an apparently serene pastime - which, at its most competitive, is actually as calculated as chess and as cruel as croquet. Single-handed control is achieved by means of radio-frequency signals that cause mini motors within the yachts to whir, enabling the boats to tack and gybe, to beat to windward, to reach, or to run (sometimes goose-winged) before a following breeze.
