The rivers Nanny and Bradan

The Rivers Nanny and Brad-an Would you believe that the Toll is on an island? The River Brad-an, just south of the Toll, is unusual in that it splits in two.
One part joins the Nanny, which flows through Julianstown, and into the sea at Lay-town, and the other part enters the sea at Moss-knee In between the island, including the Toll, is referred to as ‘Inish na Ree; “hidden island of the King.

The river “Brad-an” simply means the ‘Salmon’ river. However, the name Nanny which comes from the word Aingidhe, meaning ‘furious or irrational one’, reveals the true character of the river, as it has often unexpectedly flooded in the past.
