Fidogirizo (to weave, in the way a snake moves) Φιδογυρίζω

Through (re)imagined voices of humans, a mule, and a grape vine, our piece explores narratives of absence and presence, abandonment and survivance through the story of Margarita. She shares the name with a daisy, living her immortality out in stone. The narrative weaves voices of multiple beings and timelines, including our own experiences of multiple hills of the village, reflecting how memory, text, soil, and stone hold corners of stories in parallel but separate ways. Margarita was a warrior leader who defended life in the mountain region. She was described as a supernatural being, a Nereid. After surviving the battle, she worked as a seamstress. A disease paralyzed her, leaving her unable to move her body. The village community took care of her while the state abandoned her, leaving her with a scanty pension. She has since been memorialized in stone, overlooking the city of Volos, the mountain of Pelion, and the sea. While traveling from the schoolhouse to the location where Margarita’s bust is present, participants hear a fictional, re-imagined story told both by our voices and nonhuman collaborators. Once at the vista, listeners are invited to sit-with and listen-with in exploration of what remains, what haunts, and what needs re-telling. We invite you to add an offering to our altar of remembrance, which begins with daisies, symbols for simple happiness and saying goodbye to those passed, with violets, which in Roman history were arranged with daisies as a sign of immortality, with cones of cypress that speak about life and death, connecting earth with heaven since ancient times, and with water from the fountain in the center of the village that once granted its visitors with immortal life.

We pose the following questions for this project of sonic research-creation: What is the connection between remembrance and haunting? What survives or builds when abandonment occurs? Who exists in “empty” spaces?

Οι φωνές μερικών ανθρώπων, ενός μουλαριού και μιας κληματαριάς πλέκονται και φτιάχνουν μια ιστορία φαντασίας. Η ηχητική μας αφήγηση διερευνά τις παρουσίες και τις απουσίες, την εγκατάλειψη και τη συνέχεια της ζωής, αντλώντας έμπνευση από την ιστορία της Μαργαρίτας. Η Μαργαρίτα, όνομα γυναικείο και όνομα λουλουδιού, ζει αθάνατη μέσα στην πέτρα. Η αφήγηση διαπερνά διαφορετικές χρονικές στιγμές μέσα από την κάθε ανθρώπινη και μη ύπαρξη, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των δικών μας σχέσεων με τα καλντερίμια του χωριού, αντανακλώντας τις σκέψεις μας για το πως η μνήμη, το κείμενο, το έδαφος της γης, το χώμα και η πέτρα συγκρατούν και αναδιπλώνουν ιστορίες παράλληλες, ιστορίες που διακλαδώνονται και φιδωτά πλέκουν διαδρομές.

Η Μαργαρίτα ήταν μία μαχήτρια, που πολέμησε για την ελευθερία και τη γη. Την περιέγραψαν ως ον υπερφυσικό, ως Νηρηίδα. Μετά το τέλος του πολέμου, δούλεψε ως υφάντρα. Μία ασθένεια την παρέλυσε, δεν μπορούσε πια να δουλεύει. Τότε το χωριό ανέλαβε τη φροντίδα της, όταν το κράτος την εγκατέλειψε αφήνοντάς τη με μία πενιχρή σύνταξη. Η προτομή της ριζωμένη στην πέτρα του βουνού, στρέφει το βλέμμα της στην πόλη, το βουνό και τη θάλασσα.
Περπατώντας από το Παλιό Σχολείο της Μακρινίτσας στο σημείο που βρίσκεται η προτομή της Μαργαρίτας, οι ακροατές/τριες ακούν τη μυθο-πλασία μιας ιστορίας, μιας ιστορίας ανθρώπινων και μη-ανθρώπινων και “πέραν των ανθρώπινων” συνδέσεων. Φτάνοντας στο τέλος της διαδρομής μας σας προσκαλούμε να “καθίσετε με” και να “ακούσετε με” όσα μας στοιχειώνουν, όσα είναι ή δεν είναι εδώ, όσα έχουμε να ξαναπούμε και να ξανά ακούσουμε.
