1: Solen og Jorden

This sculpture and fountain, named Solen og Jorden, was originally a gift from the Norwegian America Line to the city of Oslo in 1936. It is a memorial for the Norwegians who emigrated to the USA. However, because of the war and later regulation plans, the assembly of the monument got delayed to 1986.

By that time, this area was a high-traffic place. Surrounding the place you now stand used to be car parkings. If you look to the ocean, you can now see some car roads. In 1986 there were multiple highways, making it difficult to access the ocean from where you’re standing.
