1: Solen og Jorden

This sculpture and fountain, named Solen og Jorden, was originally a gift from the Norwegian America Line to the city of Oslo in 1936. It is a memorial for the Norwegians who emigrated to the USA. However, because of the war and later regulation plans, the assembly of the monument got delayed to 1986.

By that time, this area was a high-traffic place. Surrounding the place you now stand used to be car parkings. If you look to the ocean, you can now see some car roads. In 1986 there were multiple highways, making it difficult to access the ocean from where you’re standing.

In an action plan in 2019 this place got established as an urban public open space for social use. During summer there is outdoor seating for the restaurants at Østbanehallen, and people can now enjoy the sound of the fountain while enjoying the sun. With both playgrounds and cafés in the area and future plans to have markets and different events in the area. This area has quickly become a popular place.

Before 2020 the sculptures on top of the fountain were facing the opposite direction to the ocean. After renovation work in 2020 the sculptures got turned around and now face the ocean. The artist's original intention for the sculptures was for them to face the ocean to represent the many Norwegians who emigrated to the USA. Why has it been facing the other way for over 30 years?

The walk is created for NyMusikk Periferien 2021. Our bodies are a myriad of things: constituting equal amounts of human cells as various bacteria, and 70% of it is water, which is in constant exchange. Our cells change according to our surroundings. Looking at the quantum world, we might even exist at several places at once. We are not stable. "We are all bodies of water. The GPS-based audio walk “Sans for finans/Money & Magic” is a guided investigation into the structural nature of the monetary creature. Inviting the audience to "pay attention" to value and money. What is money? How is money created today? Who is in control of the Norwegian Krone? More so, what is the relationship between money and value? The audience is guided by the voice of the curious spirit of Bodil, a soon to be retired anthropologist, a wanderer in the landscape of money and value, a counselor for the love-struck and love-stuck, and a traveler of many dimensions.

Hun maner fram både omskiftelige og sanselige sider ved byer, lukten av mango, trafikk og kaos, men også parker og stille oaser. I vandringen hører man lydlandskap komponisten har tatt opp fra ulike steder hun stadig vender tilbake til, samt visa «Mitt kjære Oslo» som er komponert for anledningen. Det dukker også opp andre stemmer og svar på spørsmål hun stiller udnerveis. Ruseløkkveien 60

It is approximately 50 years since the television documentary "Boliger"(Housing) was recorded, where Ellen Aanensen, Eva Brustad and Bjørn Nilsen addressed the housing crisis and housing policy in Norway. They made a documentary series divided into 6 episodes which were broadcast on NRK in 1973. The episodes have only been played on national TV once, at 00:00, in a period between 4 April - 25 October 1973. In the first episode, a neighborhood in Ruseløkka is asked about housing and living conditions, after campaigning against cars being parked in their backyard. In the work Ruseløkkveien 60, the episode from "Boliger" becomes the starting point for an exploration around who has the right to claim space in the city. This is linked to the book "Le Droit à la ville/ The Right to the City" by Henri Lefebvre, which talks about both political positions in relation to the city, but also the actions of people, and the core of who creates the city; those who reside and lives in it. How can a neighborhood that is being exploited by its landlords stand up to them? The sound installation is accessible via the Echoes app and can be played in the surrounding area of Russeløkkveien 60 and Gallery ROM for Art and Architecture.
