In March 1983, Geoff Tapper had to hastily lug a dinghy from the boating lake, across the intervening road, and into the duck pond in response to a frantic report that a toddler’s pushchair (with occupant) had toppled into the water and drifted out of reach. When retrieved, however, it contained only a doll and a bag of shopping. In September 1993, a park user reported that she had seen at least four ducks dragged down beneath the surface of the water, never to reappear, leaving only a few feathers on the surface. Their nemesis was probably a killer pike seen by other witnesses who estimated it was 2ft long. Experts believe it could have been put into the lake, but more likely had washed down a watercourse when younger and smaller.
