"[DE] »Dissonance and Desire« ist eine Klanglandschaft, die sich mit den Themen Verfall und Verwahrlosung auf dem St. Nicolai und St. Marien Friedhof in Berlin beschäftigt. Der Friedhof ist eine ruhige Oase zwischen vier belebten Straßenkreuzungen. Besucher*innen gibt es nur wenige, die letzten Verstorbenen wurden bereits vor langer Zeit begraben. Die zentrale Kapelle beherbergt eine ausgediente Pfeifenorgel, da keine Gottesdienste mehr abgehalten werden. An diesem Ort der Auflösung beginnt Timothy Isherwoods Erkundung davon, »wie die Echos der Zeit mit dem unaufhörlichen Fortschritt des Lebens koexistieren.« Indem er die Aufnahmen eines Klangspaziergangs auf dem Friedhof mit denen der mechanischen und tonalen Klänge der Pfeifenorgel verschmilzt, geht er natürlichen und kausalen Polyphonien einer in Auflösung begriffenen Umgebung nach.
Die vernachlässigte Orgel wurde seit einem Jahrzehnt weder gestimmt noch gereinigt, was eine Erkundung der Mikrotonalitäten und harmonischen Dissonanzen ermöglicht. Das Anfahren des Motors, der Druckluft zu den Pfeifen pumpt, ist angestrengt, setzt sich nur mühsam fort und sendet Echos der äußeren Straßenlandschaft. Die Register werden inmitten des Dröhnens eingestellt, um mit den Parametern von Frequenz, Oszillation, Resonanz, Hüllkurve und Sustain zu spielen, ähnlich wie bei einem analogen Synthesizer.
Timothy Isherwood (alias sir o sir) arbeitet mit Umgebungsgeräuschen, Feldaufnahmen und visuellen Elementen, um Produktionen von beruhigendem Drive zu schaffen. Mit einer Vielzahl von Quellen, Werkzeugen und Techniken (Sampling, Resonatoren, Synthesizer, präpariertem Klavier/Orgel, Rückkopplung, verstärkten Objekten, experimentellen Mikrofonen und Lautsprecheraufstellung) nutzt er Klang, um Erinnerungen als persönliches und gemeinsames Medium zu wecken. Zu seinen Performances gehören Arbeiten mit dem National Arts Centre of Canada, dem Institut-Française d'Athenes und Dock11 / Eden. Isherwood lebt in Berlin, wo er das Plattenlabel Famous Grapes kuratiert und als leitender Redakteur und Autor für die experimentelle Kunst- und Musikpublikation 20 Seconds Magazine tätig ist.
[EN] »Dissonance and Desire« is a soundscape exploring the themes of decay and deterioration in the St. Nicolai und St. Marien Friedhof in Berlin. The cemetery is a tranquil respite situated between four busy intersections. Visitors are few as the generations have passed. The central chapel houses a disused pipe organ as services are no longer held. It is from this setting of dissolution that Timothy Isherwood’s exploration begins – how the echoes of time co-exist with the ceaseless progress of life. Fusing the recordings of a sound walk in the cemetery with those of the mechanical and tonal soundings of the pipe organ, I explore the natural and causal polyphonies in this context of an environs in dissolution.
The neglected organ has not been tuned or cleaned in a decade allowing for an exploration in micro-tonalities and harmonic dissonance. The start-up of the motor that pumps pressurised air to the pipes is strained and carries on laborious, sending echoes of the exterior streetscape. The stops are adjusted mid drone to play on the parameters of frequency, oscillation, resonance, envelope and sustain, much like an analog synthesizer.
Timothy Isherwood (a.k.a sir o sir) works with ambient sounds, field recordings and visuals to create productions of calming propulsion. Using multiple sources, tools and techniques (sampling, resonators, synths, prepared piano/organ, feed back, amplified objects, experimental microphones, & speaker placement ) he uses sound to evoke memory as a personal and shared medium. His performances have includes work with National Arts Centre of Canada, Institut-Française d’Athenes, and Dock11/Eden. Timothy resides in Berlin where he curates the Famous Grapes Sessions and acts as editor/writer for the experimental art and music publication, 20 Seconds Magazine."
