I wouldn't walk in that

On Sunday afternoons a stroll in the park was an activity for maturing young people of both sexes, as well as their elders, to feed the swans on the lakes or the peacocks and pheasants in the bird sanctuary. The more energetic might walk around the lake by way of the footpath beside the railway embankment. This was done in their best Sunday clothes. One man recalls how, aged eighteen, he paraded around the park wearing a blue pinstripe suit and a bowler hat (swapped in summer for a straw boater) while carrying a walking cane with a silver knob. Girls would strive to be elegantly dressed, with a new bonnet purchased for Easter.
