Have you ever heard an owl say ‘twit-twoo’? Tawny owls are a familiar sound in Britain’s woodlands, parks and gardens. Their calls are most frequently heard at night, although they can occasionally be heard during the day, calling from their roosts. The familiar ‘too-wit too-woo’ sound isn’t the call of a single bird, but is actually made by a male and female calling to each other. The female makes a ‘too-wit’ sound and the male answers with ‘too-woo’. They duet together in the darkness...
