  1. Construction of the warehouses and buildings that make up historic properties date back to the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century. Halifax was founded in 1749. The area has been inhabited by Mi’kmaq for thousands of years.

  2. For more information about Canada’s navy, visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic’s Navy gallery.

  3. Halifax saw many young men from the prairies coming east to join Canada’s new navy, most of whom had never seen the ocean, much less sailed on it. They were known as “prairie sailors.”

  4. During World War One, American ships often stopped over in Halifax on their way across the Atlantic.

While the events depicted in this walk are true, and we have endeavoured to represent them as factually as possible, it is important to note that the characters are fictional. As such, small details about their personal lives may not be accurate. These characters have been created from the remembrances of real people, and drawn from the communities present in Halifax in December of 1917.
