Although being part of Bomber Command aircrew was an intense and dangerous experience, many veterans speak fondly of their time on leave or while off duty. For some, having never left their hometowns or, in the case of international crews, their countries, it was an opportunity to explore new sights. Many headed into the surrounding Lincolnshire countryside, while others visited landmarks such as the Cathedral.
St Michael’s Chapel, in the north transept of the Cathedral, is now known as the ‘Airmen’s Chapel’ and commemorates aircrew based in Lincolnshire who lost their lives. There is also a stained glass window dedicated to New Zealand crews.
From Minster Yard, walk along Eastgate to near the front of the Lincoln Hotel. Here you will see an information board and the exposed archeological remains of the East Gate of the wall of Lindum Colonia, the Roman colony of Lincoln.
