Introduction: Center of Contemporary Art

Sound in Space is a collection of site-based sonic experiences designed for various public spaces in Tbilisi. ​​How do sonic landscapes conceal or reveal the historical, cultural, environmental and micropolitical forces that produced them?

Students from Northeastern University in Boston and the Free University of Tbilisi worked together for a week to develop immersive soundwalks for different spaces in the city. Operating between abstraction and narrative, ambience and description, the interactive compositions annotate the perceived landscape according to the movement of the listener. By shifting the auditory dimensions of a space while maintaining its given appearance, the projects draw out the sonic registers that shape, and are shaped by, that space. The resulting soundwalks are less explications of place and more a duet, where the everyday rhythms co-exist alongside the recorded soundscapes.
