Every year we had lots of algae

In the mid-1990s the saltwater lake was again afflicted with a toxic bloom of blue-green algae. As it could be deadly to animals (although not birds or fish) and might also cause people to develop eye irritation, fever, rashes, vomiting, diarrhoea, and pain in muscles and joints, visitors were warned to keep their pets away from the water and to avoid contact with it themselves. Boarding and boardsailing were suspended. The glutinous mud-brown globular clumps of algae thrived in the bright sunlight and warm waters of exceptionally hot weather, sinking to the bottom in the evening but resurfacing when the sunlight reappeared. The Japanese electronics giant Hitachi claimed it could coat the phytoplankton with a secret formula of ferromagnetic particles, then scoop up the coagulated viscous mess with magnets.
