"[DE] Aufgenommen wurde »Magma II« im KühlhausBerlin, das eines der zentralen Orte in der Stadt ist. Es ist Teil der Architektur der frühen Industriegeschichte Berlins am Gleisdreieck, das den Krieg und mehr noch die Jahre des Wiederaufbaus nur fragmentarisch überlebte. Baustelle und zugleich Raum für Kunst, Konzerte und Veranstaltungen – so präsentiert sich das Haus heute auf sieben Etagen mit einer Vielzahl außergewöhnlicher Räume und architektonischer Situationen, mit insgesamt über 5000 qm. Ein Ort der Begegnung und Kreativität, der offen ist für Partnerschaften, Impulse, Ideen – offen für die Stadt. In der Eigenkomposition »Magma II« des Sonar Quartetts, die im Rahmen der Konzertreihe EVOLUTION entstanden ist, betrachten die Musiker*innen die Improvisation selbst als einen Evolutionsprozess.
Seit seiner Gründung 2006 tastet das Sonar Quartett immer wieder die Ränder der klassischen Musik ab, es erschafft Utopien und improvisiert Klangabdrücke, deren Nachhall schon den Weg zum nächsten notierten Werk nährt. Die vier in Berlin lebenden Musiker verstehen sich als komponierendes Streichquartett, das weit über vermeintliche Genregrenzen hinausgreift, indem es sich auch der eigenen Körper, elektronischer Verstärkung und Verfremdung bedient oder auch bildkünstlerische Werke in Klang verwandelt. Neue Musik geht mit dem Sonar Quartett über das Hör- und Sichtbare hinaus, sie wird für die Spielenden und für die Zuhörer gleichermaßen zu einem taktilen Erlebnis.

Magma II was recorded at KühlhausBerlin: Kühlhaus Berlin is located at the junction of the districts of Schöneberg and Kreuzberg, with Mitte only a stone’s throw away. It is a cultural landmark, and a unique example of pre-war industrial architecture. Today, it is an event location. A place of energy, a dynamic place, a place that moves with the heartbeat of the city and constantly reinvents itself. It offers a multitude of unique and extraordinary rooms and architectural situations on a space of more than five thousand square meters.
Since its formation in 2006, the Sonar Quartet has tested the limits of classical music, creating new worlds through improvised sound impressions whose reverberations pave the way for the next composition. The four musicians living in Berlin see themselves as a composing string quartet that goes far beyond supposed genre boundaries by also using their own bodies, electronic amplification and alienation or also transforming visual works into sound. With the Sonar Quartet, new music goes beyond the audible and visible, it becomes a tactile experience for the players and for the listeners alike."
