Mary on the Map

1 sound

This image shows Mary after her surrender being led through the streets of Edinburgh, where she was confined in the Provost's house. Next day she was taken to Lochleven Castle, where, a few weeks later she was forced to abdicate in favour of her year-old son, James VI.
Almost a year later she escaped from captivity, and managed to raise loyal forces again -- but these were soon defeated at the Battle of Langside, and she fled into English exile and imprisonment until her death nearly twenty years later.
