Sabe and Rose (2:17)

Rose and Sabe are played by Diety Dionysus There is very little known about Sabe and Rose Derby, both enslaved to famed Salem mariner Elias Hasket Derby. A page from the Derby family bible lets us know that Sabe was born on July 14, 1771, which means that by the time victory was won at Yorktown, he would have been 10 years old. Sabe and Rose were married the same year as Derby’s death, 1799. Recently, the National Park Service released their “Pathways to Freedom” tour, which documents and traces the lives of Sabe and Rose from enslavement to business owners.
