During the creation of this trail, artists Electric Egg worked with Westgate Academy Primary School on an installation exploring the themes of home and migration. The school has its own connection with Bomber Command. Visible through the school gates is a memorial to the crew of a Hampden bomber that crashed nearby in the war. It’s pilot, P/O Dudley Snooke, remained at the controls long enough to allow his crew to bail out and possibly to steer the aircraft away from residential buildings, before bailing out himself. Sadly, he was killed when his parachute failed to open properly at such a low altitude. The following day, a pupil at the school, Desmond Kerringham, found his cap near the wreckage.
Students explored the stories of veterans from overseas and were asked to draw on their own experiences to reflect on what home means to them. The children created cyanotype artworks, learned digital skills, and took part in filming. Listen to their work.
Be guided by the towers of Lincoln Cathedral and walk to Minster Yard and the foot of the Cathedral’s West Front.
