The Yacht Basin is managed by the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Cub for the benefit of leisure yachts.
It's been there as long as there as been a harbour (1846) as a way to draw in tourists and holiday makers. Today it's the permanent mooring of the Mincarlo and the place where you can catch the ferry. When tall ships and heritage boats come to Lowestoft, this is where they moor.
During the wars, the Yacht Basin was the home of the minesweepers and naval boats, and even saw an occasional submarine. Today the working boats you'll see are the lifeboats for the RNLI.
