Priory Row

3-5 Priory Row, previously known as the Lychgate Cottages are Grade II* listed, timber framed 3 story cottages in the city centre. Dating back between 1550-1600s, it is thought that Rev. Bryan of Holy Trinity built them in 1415 and they form numbers 3,4 and 5 today. Lychgate, lych being the old English name for corpse, was once the entrance for the funerary processions into the Holy Trinity churchyard where the coffin would rest awaiting the vicar’s arrival. The timber used for these buildings has been tree-ring dated back to around 1415, meaning that the timber used to build them sat for many years near the church. They contain 17th century cellars.
