SOMEONE NAMED AL ALONE IN THE YARD
AL
Al is alone.
He stands in his yard.
It is night.
There is a breeze.
He stands in his yard alone at night.
He was awoken by the sound…
He was awoken by the sound of the bedroom door opening.
Careful, quiet, and slow as if not wanting to wake him up.
In the yard, alone at night, he thinks:
(Whose house is this?)
(This house isn't mine), he thinks.
It opened how she would open it.
She was always careful to never wake him up, inevitably waking him up.
He was awoken by this, inevitably, quietly, asleep, alone, he was awoken.
(She's here), he thought.
From work.
From downstairs.
From the rest of her day.
From the parts of her life he was not there for.
But the doorway was empty.
A window was left open.
The breeze blew the door ajar.
Staring at the doorway… :'(
Staring at the doorway he thinks–
He remembers:
(She isn't here.)
He remembers:
(She isn't here anymore.)
…
In the yard, alone at night, he thinks: (This house was ours.)
In the yard, standing, alone, he sees the moon, alone, he asks the moon:
"Whose house is this
if there is no our anymore?"
But the moon continues on without him…
He will sleep on the porch tonight
in a lawn chair taken from the garage.
In the garage, he hears:
HOUSE
I'm sorry.
AL
And pretends to have never known this house in his life.
