In the autumn of 1980 a five-year-old boy dribbled a ball with a hockey stick around thirteen laps (4 miles) of the park’s cycle track to raise cash for a renovation of the East Gate Lodge. In May 1991 over forty children all under five years of age tricycled, bicycled or scootered around the track for the National Childbirth Trust’s antenatal teaching programme. In January 1990, twenty-five Poole Sea Cadets embarked on a twenty-five-hour non-stop sail around the saltwater lake. Becalmed for five hours during the night, with sub-zero temperatures and ice forming on every surface, they were compelled to tow so as to complete the challenge in aid of the new Delph Wood residential centre for the severely handicapped.
