[DE] »Ich habe mein Stück konzipiert für die Ansicht des Wasserfalls von seinem Ursprung her, nämlich oben am Berg, an der imaginären Quelle.« so Edith Steyer. »Dabei sollen die Pausen beitragen, sich nicht nur in der Musik zu verlieren, sondern auch das Rauschen des Wasserfalls wahrzunehmen, zu integrieren und die Geräusche aus dem Umfeld zuzulassen, wie in einer beobachtenden Meditation: ein idyllischer Wasserfall mitten in der Stadt, mit Schmetterlingen, fallenden Blättern, Autolärm und schreienden Passanten.« Im Winter lädt Steyer dazu ein, den Wasserfall ohne Wasser zu erklimmen, hinauf- und hinabzusteigen. Die 1894 aus dem Boden gestampfte Gebirgslandschaft, durch die der 24 Meter hohe Wasserfall des Viktoriaparks ins Tal fließt, wirkt dank groben Felsgestein und typischer Mittelgebirgsflora (fast) täuschend echt. Sein Vorbild lässt sich im Riesengebirge zwischen Polen und Tschechien finden.
Edith Steyer ist Klarinettistin und Saxofonistin im Bereich der freien und experimentellen Improvisation, sowie Komponistin. Nach einem Jazzstudium und mehreren Jahren Arbeit als Jazzmusikerin, begann sie sich vermehrt von den spezifischen formalen, tonalen und harmonischen Vorgaben zu verabschieden. Heute widmet sie sich der Erforschung ihrer Instrumente durch erweiterte Spieltechniken, Präparationen und dem Einsatz von Feedback. In ihren Projekten verwebt sie die Klänge der Holzblasinstrumente prozesshaft mit anderen Instrumenten, arbeitet mal thematisch, mal konzeptuell und performativ. Immer auf der Suche nach ungewöhnlichen Sounds und Strukturen ist ihr oberstes Ziel, der Musik, in der Kommunikation mit den anderen Musiker*innen, Bedeutung und Intensität zu verleihen. Sie erhielt mehrere Förderungen, darunter vom Berliner Senat (2021 für ein Klangkunstprojekt), dem Musikfond (2020/21 für eine Recherche zu dem Klarinettisten John Carter) , der GEDOK und einigen mehr.
[EN] "I conceived my piece for the view of the waterfall from its source, namely up on the mountain, at the imaginary spring," says Edith Steyer. "In doing so, the pauses are meant to contribute to not only losing oneself in the music, but also to perceive and integrate the sound of the waterfall as well as the sounds from the surroundings, just as in an observational meditation: an idyllic waterfall in the middle of the city, with butterflies, falling leaves, car noise and shouting passers-by. " In winter, Steyer invites visitors to climb, ascend and descend the waterfall without water. The mountainous landscape carved out of the ground in 1894, through which the 24-metre-high waterfall of the Viktoriapark flows into the valley, looks (almost) deceptively real thanks to rough rock and typical low mountain flora. Its model can be found in the Giant Mountains between Poland and the Czech Republic.
Edith Steyer is a free improvising clarinet and saxophone player with her roots in jazz and classical music of the 20th century. As a former student for social anthropology she is also interested in ethnic music. She is dedicated to the exploration of her instruments and works with different preparations and elements like drum skins, water and wind and lately also with electronic devices. Aside from working on a solo concept, her foremost interest is to create intelligently woven interactions and sound scapes with other artists. For that she is using timbre, noises and tonal or melodic fragments. She is currently also working on expanding the technical possibilities, that are inherent to the awkward fingerings of the „old fashioned“ german clarinet system. The challenge to the motor skills acts as a source for inspiration to develop ideas for tonal and instrumental deconstruction and compositional constructions. She is also working in different musical theatre groups and has great interest in using the space as an element in her work.
