Whenever I walk from the tube to the CSM campus, I always put on my noise-canceling headphones.
The idea of silencing external noise to isolate a chosen sound is ridiculous. In sound mixing, the way mixing bar works feels quite similar to the logic behind noise-canceling technology. To highlight certain sounds, everything else must be pushed below zero. The focus, then, is on the sounds that disappear. What sound targeted as "disturbance" and buried beneath the mix? Must reverse it!
