Sometime in the mid-1940s a German raider dropped a bomb which demolished the rustic bridge across the narrow neck of the freshwater lake and killed two ducks. The incident was witnessed by members of the 4th Parkstone Sea Scouts who were out sailing their three dinghies - Cobweb, Tricolour and Fluffy Girl. The traitorous British passport holder William Joyce, who was actually Brooklyn-born to Irish parents (nicknamed ‘Lord Haw-Haw’ because of his drawling speech) broadcast on Hamburg Radio a few days later that the Luftwaffe had inflicted serious damage to installations around Poole Harbour.
