In that city — where they knew no divisions, leaders, rulers, religions, or social classes; indeed, where four classes and eight classes had been abolished — the glorious signs and signposts of the Kingdom were everywhere scattered, erected, and multiplied, as quickly as the walls and gates could be made. Two days, or more, it might take the weary traveler from the distant cities of the Empire to cover the distance to them. As soon as they passed through the city gates and stepped inside, from the streets to the innermost depths of the palace, as quietly as possible, they found themselves at the signpost of the Senate, the signpost of the Chamber of Arts, or sometimes the signpost of the Great City. Then they climbed up a sort of short stone fence on both sides of the street for three blocks; and there had to look at not only distant faces, or signs of their distant fate, but also outer signs, which proved that they were neither a slave nor an angel, but a man.
