About the composer:
British composer Isaac Oliver Short is currently in the first year of his undergraduate composition studies at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Gary Carpenter. He has had his music performed on BBC Radio 1, BBC Nottingham & BBC Bristol. He has a specific interest in the visual elements of music and often focuses his composition around piano and electronics, with over ten years-worth of experience with both.
About the tree:
Unfortunately this robust fast growing and splendid oak co-evolved with a gall wasp; it is not much affected by the pathogen because of the co-evolution; however widespread planting in Britain has introduced the pathogen to English oaks which do not possess the same degree of resistance to the wasp. The result: distorted and sterile acorns.
About the composition:
This species has only a single tree within the boundaries of the project, and it is a much taller tree compared to those that are in close proximity to it. As it also appears to be a stable tree, with a straight trunk and a well-formed structure, I approached this tree with far broader musical brushstrokes than the others. Slow, pulsating rhythms can be heard below single, long chords that enter in and die out softly. This piece was created using modular synthesis and samples of string orchestra.
