About the composer:
British composer Isaac Oliver Short is currently in the first year of his undergraduate composition studies at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Gary Carpenter. He has had his music performed on BBC Radio 1, BBC Nottingham & BBC Bristol. He has a specific interest in the visual elements of music and often focuses his composition around piano and electronics, with over ten years-worth of experience with both.
About the tree:
This hybrid of a turkey oak and a cork oak originated at the nursery of Whitley and Osborne of Fulham and was sold from there from 1783. The tree has outlived its origins.
About the composition:
A single, large, incredibly powerful tree. Its distinct trunk and leaves seemed so different in character that it turned the piece into a conflict between the two elements of the tree. Created using a modular synthesiser, the patch was set up to have the flute-like sound react to the percussive mallet sound in an aleatoric way, whenever it was triggered. This creates an argument instead of a conversation.
