About the composer:
Joseph Graydon (b.1997) is a composer from south wales currently studying in the Royal Academy of Music with Edmund Finnis. After beginning composing aged 15, Joseph studied French horn and composition at the junior department of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Since enrolling at the Academy, Joseph has won the Turner-Cooke composition prize and has had numerous pieces performed.
About the tree:
The name comes from the old English 'horn' meaning iron and 'beam' meaning wood. The wood's strength was used for load bearing tasks in such as cartwheels, tool handles and chopping blocks. As the hornbeam loves heavy clay soils, it is a true tree of London!
About the composition:
The Hornbeams dense foliage was a central point to the writing process. I aimed to produce material of a morphing density, focusing on mirroring the movement of the tree within its environment. The Hornbeams feature subtle variations, in which the music from the tree blends simply with the other trees in close distance to it.
