In 2006, a sonic repellent device known as a ‘Mosquito’ was acquired and installed in the vicinity of the Cygnet play area, programmed to transmit an intermittent stream of uncomfortable sound waves, audible only to the under-twenties, between 7 pm and midnight to deter youths form loitering there. Despite the maker’s assurance that the device causes no physical harm to its hearers, youth campaigners began in 2008 to agitate for these appliances to be banned, as they demonised all youngsters indiscriminately.
