E- Pilots Wood

1 sound

This part of Shoreham Woods is known as Pilots Wood. This area is made up of mostly mature Beech, Birch and Sweet Chestnut trees. Sweet Chestnut is common in the south east of England, but it is not really a native British tree. It was introduced by the Romans for its tasty nuts, but they don’t ripen well in our climate, so most of the chestnuts we eat are imported. However, sweet chestnut timber has many uses. The long straight poles are traditionally used as supports in Kent’s famous hop gardens.
