The Hunterian connects people with stories, individuals and ideas through its collection of objects, belongings and artworks. Opened in 1807, it Is Scotlands oldest public museum. Most recently it has been undertaking a project called 'curating discomfort' which seeks to explore how the museum and its objects can be explored through the lens of historical power imbalances, for example, surrounding racism and colonialism.
As you look around, keep an eye out for The Tassie Medallion - a portrait medallion of Adam Smith carved by stonemason James Tassie. You will also see the ‘Blackstone Chair’ which students sat upon to take oral examinations. Set into the top of the chair, is an hourglass filled with sand. Adam Smith would have sat on a very similar chair as a student, and would have turned the hourglass at the top of the chair to examine his own students when he was a professor here at the University.
