The site of the Cornerhouse operated as a cinema for 80 years between May 1935 to April 2015. It changed names many times over the years from Tatler News Theatre, Classic Cinema, Tatler Cinema Club and Glamour Cinema Club. Each new iteration’s output ranged from the informative to the provocative.
The Cornerhouse portion of its history lasted 30 years, giving Manchester a much-missed taste of arthouse cinema and chances to meet filmmakers in one of their many Q&A sessions. The venue was set across two sites, the first which looms on the corner of Oxford Road and Whitworth Street West housed a gallery space, shop and small restaurant with its screens being on the basement level. The second just over Oxford Road Station approach consisted of a foyer and a single, large screen.
Mrs Morgan talks about the difficulties facing cinema operators when watch committees censored films due to be shown. In the early days of cinema, X certificates could be given for the smallest of reasons depending on the sensibility of those on the committee. The results of which were felt through a films entire run.
