Isaac is joking about spies. It is true that George Washington sent spies to Halifax to keep an eye on the British and examine defences. However, the attack and ensuing siege of Quebec began 31 December, 1775, while Washington’s plans to invade Nova Scotia date to early 1776.
The army of the Victorian era was different from the army of World War One, and the rank and file soldiers of the Victorian era regiments had not always behaved themselves in Halifax. For example, in August of 1838 a disgruntled group of soldiers instigated a two-day riot which destroyed a number of taverns and other buildings in the area of Duke Street.
