The Heart of Jamaica Avenue

How are our earliest memories constructed and what role do images play in developing a sense of our early past? This sound-walk through Queens’ Alley Pond Park emerged out of a conversation with my father that a occurred in response to newly viewing a box of his grandparents’ slides that I recently found and scanned. Made up largely of early images of my father that he had not seen for at least fifty years, if at all, this walk documents the process of seeing the images anew - and proves an interesting site of audiovisual exploration - drawing connections and distinctions between place, family memory, image, archive, and interpretation.

An immersive simulation emulating auditory hallucinations. Created in order to bring awareness as well as share the experience of how the experience feels. Walk includes several real life personal examples created to be as identical and immersive as possible. Headphones with low bass capabilities required. Walk recommended to be done at late dusk.

Welcome to the Echoes of Youth, a multigenerational sound map featuring youth memories from throughout New York City, produced by Megan Hattie Stahl. Currently, there are 16 stories geolocated in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. These audio stories were submitted in response to a Spring 2023 open call for place-based memories in New York City's publicly accessible spaces. Participants were invited to record memories of their youth, defined here as between the ages of 15-24. Blue shapes overlaid on the black and grey map below indicated there is a story located there. Stories and their locations are also listed below. To launch the walk, press 'Stream Walk' or download the walk to the right. Make sure you allow GPS tracking permissions, and audio will play automatically when you walk into a blue zone. While listening, you can tap on each blue zone to view more information and a photo. Astoria Park is a very big park that has several trails and playgrounds. There are two bridges that are right above the park, which are Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and Hell Gate Bridge. The park is also right next to the East River. People do a lot of things in the park, such as jogging, walking themselves and dogs, biking, playing tennis, skateboarding and so on. So, one can easily find peace and energy at this park. I hope to express my feelings toward this park through the sound walk project
