A geotagged audio conversation and debate about the future of Silent Sam, a confederate monument at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

Thank you for downloading our geotagged audio tour, created by UNC's ARTS 106 class, taught by Sabine Gruffat, during the fall 2017 semester. If you haven't already, make your way to McCorkle Place, the quad between Franklin Street and Cameron Avenue. Search its pathways to encounter an array of voices speaking on the Silent Sam statue controversy. There are 16 recordings available that are represented by circles shown on the map. It is important to remember that the audio file will only play within the boundary of its circle. We hope you enjoy the audio tour "No Longer Silent."

At one time, our town was even under consideration to be the state capital of North Carolina. President George Washington slept in Tarboro during a visit on his 1791 Southern tour, and is noted to have said of our town that \[quote] “it was the best salute you could have from a single cannon.”
