African American History Trail Tour - Lake City, SC

African American History Trail Tour - Lake City, SC

The roots of African American history runs deep in South Carolina, providing a rich history that spans over three centuries and every corner of the state. Stories of the enslaved and free people of color to civil rights activists, politicians, educators, pastors and many more all contributed to this history. The constant struggle for equality and freedom is often seen in these stories. Lake City was no exception and this rich legacy lives on in the city at historical sites, remnants, oral histories, and cultural traditions. This tour highlights some of Lake City's historical African American sites while telling the unique story that Lake City contributed to African American history in the state of South Carolina and the nation. There are eight sites on this tour throughout the city including the Ronald E. McNair Library and Monument, P.D. Cockfield House, Lynches Historical Society Building (former segregated hospital), Frazier Baker (Lake City) Post Office, the Lynching of Frazier Baker Historical Marker (Deep River Street and Church Street), Greater St. James A.M.E. Church Historical Marker, Lake City Rosenwald (segregated) School, and the Bronze Huey Cooper Statue.

Botanical Garden Soundwalk Project

Botanical Garden Soundwalk Project

On Earth Day 2021, the Botanical Garden Soundwalk was unveiled to the public and will remain through Summer 2021 and beyond. This soundwalk installation features a variety of soundscapes composed by student and faculty members of the Student Composers Association (SCA) of the University of Georgia. Playback of soundscapes on the ECHOES app is prompted by the geolocational positioning of the listener within the collections of the botanical gardens. Visitors may design their own interactive soundtrack by virtue of the duration and order of regions they encounter. A range of soundscapes is assembled here from multiple contributors, each with a unique sound approach to illustrate aspects of the natural environment. Charge your phone. Bring your headphones. Wear comfortable shoes. Be inspired. Note: After downloading the ECHOES app to your smart device, access the UGA Botanical Garden Soundwalk by going to https://tinyurl.com/ugasoundwalk or scan the QR-code available at the Visitor Center of the UGA Botanical Gardens.

NO LONGER SILENT

NO LONGER SILENT

A geotagged audio conversation and debate about the future of Silent Sam, a confederate monument at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Thank you for downloading our geotagged audio tour, created by UNC's ARTS 106 class, taught by Sabine Gruffat, during the fall 2017 semester. If you haven't already, make your way to McCorkle Place, the quad between Franklin Street and Cameron Avenue. Search its pathways to encounter an array of voices speaking on the Silent Sam statue controversy. There are 16 recordings available that are represented by circles shown on the map. It is important to remember that the audio file will only play within the boundary of its circle. We hope you enjoy the audio tour "No Longer Silent."
