Mamanaw Pekiskwewina | Mother Tongues: amiskwacîwâskahikan is a celebration of the ancestral languages of Treaty 6. It is beautiful to witness, stand beside, care for the incredible public [gifts of art]. Mamanaw Pekiskwewina: amiskwacîwâskahikan includes seven traditional indigenous languages of Treaty 6: Inuktun (Inuvialuktun and Inuktitut), nêhiyawêwin, Nitsiipowahsiin, Michif, Denesųłiné, Nahkawiwin and Nakota. These ancestral languages are embedded across the downtown core in amiskwacîwâskahikan. Visibility is powerful and to have the living languages which come from this land be seen in the midst of an urban environment speaks to the resilience and the survival of our people and languages. This makes our hearts soar. Mamanaw Pekiskwewina | Mother Tongues was originally conceived by Missy LeBlanc for TRUCK Contemporary Art in Mohkínstsis/Kootsisáwa/Wincheesh-pah/Calgary and presented in concert with Taskoch pipon kona kah nipa muskoseya, nepin pesim eti pimachihew. I got lost in the storm when I was skiing alone on the mountain. At that time, my phone ran out of power. However, I managed to get to the foot of the mountain and meet my friends.

Welcome to this AR land acknowledgement and audio tour of Whey-Ah-Wichen by Sun-Dance Chief Rueben George of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. The tour is intended to ground environmental justice and Indigenous perspectives in Indigenous ways of knowing, emphasizing the TMX's pipeline expansion on this very land and water. This tour was produced by faculty and students at the University of British Columbia and was originally introduced for a UBC course on Climate Justice. Directing and interviewing were done by Avi Lewis, shooting by Nathan Skillen, editing by Aaron Woods, and field and platform production by Laura Flores and Alina Debyser. Enduring thanks to Rueben George for his wisdom and generosity. INSTRUCTIONS: The Cates Park entrance sign at the intersection of Dollarton Highway and Cates Park Road marks the first point. There are 4 other points to walk between, indicated by circles on the map (numbered 2-5). To ensure that you follow them in the right order, click on a circle to see its number. Welcome to this Augmented Reality land acknowledgment and audio tour of Whey-Ah-Wichen by Sun-Dance Chief Rueben George of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. The tour is intended to ground the study of climate justice in Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing, emphasizing the relationship of the Tsleil-Waututh people, who have been stewarding this very land and water for countless generations. Particularly relevant in recent years has been the struggle to stop the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline right here in this place. INSTRUCTIONS: The map shows five areas highlighted by four circles and one triangle (starting point). The content will be triggered automatically if you physically walk into these areas.
