Here lies the happenings of the busy and abundant life of a Matsuri event held at Queensland Raceway. One of two events held each year, however, with the fast-changing environment of the banning of motor sporting events, who knows what will happen? So savour the smell of the burning rubber, the squeal of the tyres as they tear up the bitumen, and keep your eyes open for the fast-paced environment, savour it all while you can.

When At Camp

Over the course of two and a half days, camping is a great way to get in on all the action spread across the Drift Matsuri event. Enjoy a barbecue next to cars zooming past sideways on the Big Track. Is that rubber or bacon you smell? It's both!

In the Pits

‘Something just broke, I’m going back to the pits’, said nearly every driver at a racing event. Here lies the action-packed garages with tools, liquids, and car parts scattered in every bay. Frustrated drivers and friends helping out to do a quick fix to get back on track as quickly as they can. A place for drivers to rest and make changes to their cars because they know their cars can do better. There is always something happening in the pits.

Food and Merchandise Stalls

There can’t be a jam-packed event without the goods. Food and merchandise of course you’ll be spending your money! When you are too busy on your feet, grabbing a snack and drink along the way to the next location is the best way to stay energised and hydrated. We can’t forget the memorabilia, the t-shirt kind of course, cause how else are we going to show off to our friends that we were here.

Wet Pan

From early in the day to late in the night, the wet pan is a great place to start learning to control your car. From figure 8's and 360's you’ll be ready for the big track in no time. Just make sure not to get too close to the wall cause we know that never ends well.

Playground

Now you might be thinking playgrounds are only for kids p.s. there not! This playground is filled with bitumen, barricades, and concrete walls, the perfect place to have fun in your car. This track is a safe space for beginners learning to drift, intermediates to advance their skills, and experts to have a blast. But don’t be fooled these turns are quick and tight so make sure to stay in control.

The Pit Lane

Now let’s rock and roll. It’s time to get pumped up cause you have just got your yellow band meaning it’s time to hit the big track. With cars left, right, and centre making their way past as they head on track and those coming back off to cool down after some hot laps. Don’t forget to fasten your seatbelts and make sure to stay under 40km’s because the rules are there for everyone’s safety.

Big Track

From the sidelines and inside the car feel the roar of cars accelerating into the turns, the idling of engines and the booming music of each driver. Nowhere else will you feel the vibrations in your body, the smell of burning rubber as tyres are torn up on the bitumen and if you have the windows down expect some dirt and rubber flying towards you as you chase the car in front.

A Plant is a Community - Root Listening

WHY LISTEN TO PLANTS? A plant knows and makes worlds. It communicates. https://liquidarchitecture.org.au/events/a-plant-is-a-community When we regard a plant, we usually only see what’s above the surface: stems, trunks, branches, leaves, buds and flowers. But there’s so much more below ground – intricate nets of roots, radicles and fungal bodies through which water, nutrients, knowledge and community flows. Plants are always connected, always talking and listening to each other, even in the most constructed of landscapes. A plant knows and makes worlds; it is always in communication with others. Through root-listening, through practices of sharing words, time — and seeds — can we cultivate a vegetable-based consciousness? This augmented reality sound walk uses Leah Barclay’s recordings from beneath the surface of the soil to explore the acoustic ecology of plants in response to Monica Gagliano’s new book ‘Thus Spoke the Plant’ (North Atlantic Books; released November 13, 2018).

For this AR soundwalk I decided to take users on a walk through the park. I sat and listened to the sounds of the park and felt calm and at peace. This track however, has been designed for everything to go wrong at the park and ruin that peaceful and happy feeling you’d normally enjoy in this space. This soundwalk takes users on a journey through the park at its worst state, filled with teens playing loud music, crying children, angry dogs, swooping birds, and bad weather.
