Are skateparks louder than everything else?

This is a cool project for my school: I chose three coordinates and added 30-second sound bites for people to discover. These locations are inspired from places in the city of Toronto.

Why here? Since I arrived in Canada, the lake has always been a place where I felt at home. During the summer months I come to this very beach, slowly dip my feet into the water and then walk a couple of steps until the water reaches my knees. With my back towards the sandy beach, I face the horizon - if I just focus my gaze on that horizon - all I can see is sky and water, blue on blue, and I keep telling myself: this could be Italy. It does look exactly like this. The horizon between the sea and the sky is the same. Everything about the city behinds me is blocked out of my sight. I completely loose myself in the reveries of being home for those brief moments. Who's here? In this walk I have disseminated sounds and voices of Italian immigrants who came to America and North America long before me, from one shore to the other.Their voices are left untranslated on purpose.

As you finish middle school, sudden changes will affect your growth both mentally and physically. High school is that time when you get to really know yourself and build your fundamental values that will shape the rest of your life.

As the mouth speaks tends to relations-in-process during the revitalization of former marshland today known as Biidaasige Park on Ookwemin Minising. Complicating colonial conceptualizations of Land as ‘resource’ and ‘sink’ that move through the past, present and future, this soundwalk weaves together histories, notes from the field and field recordings to compose a sonic collage. Presented through a singular voice recorded on site the soundwalk embraces the glitchy and disruptive interruptions from the field—such as wind and construction noise—to expose the performativity of listening and recording which are not universal, neutral or objective acts. Geolocated ‘echoes’ overlap, tangling temporalities to disrupt a singular linear narrative of how the artificial island Ookwemin Minising came to be. The soundwalk conjures multiple temporalities of the park as marsh, infilled industrial site, dump, revitalized public space and its possible futures. Listeners are invited to oscillate between knowing and unknowing—what they are hearing, understanding and experiencing—to think critically about the spatial politics of urban change. Without a defined beginning or end As the mouth speaks invites multiple and differing approaches to listening in/to place.

This sound map is based on data from lostrivers.ca and illustrates underground waterways not seen on local maps in decades. Varying sounds are used based on century. “Lost River Walks” is a joint project of The Toronto Green Community, The Toronto Field Naturalists and community partners including Hike Ontario.

A throwback memory to when life was a bit simpler. This is the short take of how I felt some of the worst pain in my life. Pretty much was a hit and run with myself as many unfortunate events folded in on themselves for me to end up colliding with the pointy end of a handlebar. This is that story and the aftermath therein.
