Decoding Nature: Sense impression and the biophony

room 50 ECHOES

Halifax

Decoding Nature: Sense impression and the biophonoy, encourages the practice of deep listening within and without the environment. The experience of this walk is inherently “meta" and is meant to be embodied virtually and physically, tapping into the senses on many levels.

The term "sense impression" comes from the Sanskrit word Sparśa and is defined as the coming together of three factors: the sense organ, the sense object, and sense consciousness. Biophony is a term used to describe the collective voice of non-human life within our environment.

This project brings together these elements within the natural geographical ecosystems surrounding Mount Saint Vincent University, Nova Scotia, Canada, layering what is present and absent in an augmented environment. It is intended to open minds and hearts to the possibility of interspecies cohabitation in their community.

Zorica Kelly Markovich
As a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of art, science, and technology, my practice is one of exploration. Engaging through issues of loss, permanence, presence, and absence, I draw reference from biology, anthropology, and neuroscience. The core theme throughout is interconnectedness—relationships within networks, memory, and collective experiences.
