Sonic Boundaries: Power and Discipline in Stratford

7 ECHOES

Location: Stratford, Ontario, Canada

What if the sounds we hear every day reveal invisible rules about how we should behave?

Sonic Boundaries: Power and Discipline in Stratford is a seven-stop soundwalk exploring how sound reflects social expectations, public rules, and institutional power.

The journey begins in everyday commercial spaces, including a chocolate shop, a coffee shop, and LCBO, where conversations and routine activities create different sound environments. It then moves to a busy roadside, where traffic and warning signals compete for attention.

The final three stops take listeners inside Stratford School, moving from a lively social area through corridors and elevators to a quieter classroom.

As you walk, pay attention to how different spaces influence what we hear, how we move, and how loudly we behave.

Follow the stops in numerical order (01–07) for the intended experience. Headphones are recommended.

01 - Chocolate Shop: Welcomed Voices

In this chocolate shop, conversations and everyday shopping sounds create a welcoming environment. Listen to how people interact and consider how friendly voices become part of the shopping experience. Here, sound is encouraged because it supports social interaction and consumption.

02 - Coffee Shop: Unspoken Social Rules

A coffee shop is a place for conversation, relaxation, and work. Listen to the sounds around you and notice how people share the same space. Even without strict rules, social expectations can influence how loudly we speak and behave.

04 - Roadside: Public Sound and Control

The roadside is filled with competing sounds, from passing vehicles to voices and warning signals. Listen to how mechanical announcements stand out within the noise. Even in public spaces, sound can communicate rules and guide people's movements.

05 - School Social Area: Permitted Noise

Schools are often associated with quietness, but not every space follows the same expectations. Here, conversations, music, and activities are part of everyday student life. Notice how noise is welcomed in some areas but discouraged in others.

06 - School Transition Area: Directed Movement

As you move through the school, listen to footsteps, doors, and elevator announcements. These sounds do more than describe the environment. They help organize movement and remind us how technology and architecture influence our everyday behaviour.

07 - Classroom: Expected Silence

The classroom offers a quieter contrast to the busy spaces earlier in the walk. Small movements and ordinary indoor sounds become easier to notice. Think about how we naturally adjust our voices and behaviour when entering a space where quietness is expected.

Can You Guess the Age of Water? A Soundwalk Across Stratford's Generations A seven-stop soundwalk through downtown Stratford, recorded on a Zoom H6. Rather than adding to the town's heritage image, it observes the quiet daily life of older residents alongside the machines and younger people around them. The two don't merge, but they share the same sidewalks and move past each other in a kind of harmony. The walk ends at a water fountain, where the question "Can you guess the age of water?" turns the listener's attention from human age to time itself.
