Mariah: I have the best job in the world. My mom used to tell me women were a minority in the energy industry before I was born. Now, I run a special team with other engineers as we inspect and regulate the renewable energy farms. We ensure the industry remains fair to everyone through this. Energy is everywhere, so it must stay fair. In this specific area, we inspect solar and wind farms because they are the most booming. The regulations were also created to ensure safety of independent owners and their employees during the times we do not visit.

Mariah: The wind farms of West Texas can be seen en route to Amarillo from Lubbock. This area worked well being in the panhandle. Long before the fall of other industries, there was already wind energy research happening in the area. Amarillo is also the location of a research partnership in wind energy with Texas Tech. Students can spend a semester in Amarillo eating and breathing wind energy. The wind farms allowed the area to grow but Amarillo still holds its roots.

Mariah: Thanks to being surrounded by solar and wind farms, Texas Tech is fully and efficiently powered by both. Engineering students also have the opportunity to work in both the industries in aiding of research. Students are able to build their own simulations of green energy farms. Texas Tech also pays homage to the industry with a public art display of a shrunken wind farm placed in their engineering key. Texas Tech has become a mash-up of the past and present.

Mariah: Not much of Lubbock has changed here in 2120. Buildings still look the same but are updated on the inside. Lubbock and technology have partnered together to create a futuristic society. The humble feeling of Lubbock is still here thanks to most buildings not changing in appearance. The same goes for Texas Tech as it appears to have just been updated for the future. The Hub City keeps to its nickname with being a place connecting far and wide.

Mariah: With the death of the oil industry, it was assumed small West Texas towns wouldn’t make it. However, that was definitely not the case. The towns surrounding Midessa and Lubbock stayed afloat thanks to agriculture. They banded together like true Texans do. Once the green energy industry came knocking, the residents of small-town West Texas were ready to get to work. A true fit of inspiration to never give up or look down at the ground.

Mariah: In the year 2120, the South Plains still reigns supreme as a large cotton producer. We saw industries die out and float away with the wind, but not cotton. Cotton fields remain filled and full every season. The cotton industry faced a low when pollution amassed and riddled the earth. Yet, once things became green, the cotton industry picked up right where it left off. A steady boom for a timeless industry.

Mariah: Welcome to Midland/Odessa. Or Midessa, as some locals like to call it. When the oil boom dried out in the 2030s, Midessa was left high and dry. Locals were also left to pick up the pieces. No longer was there a cushion of a booming industry. By 2050, a new industry started making way in the area. Solar energy farms started being built, and soon was powering the cities and surrounding towns. The area was a perfect place, being in the near edge of a desert. The people of Midessa pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and now are the leading area in solar energy.

Mariah: Hi, my name is Mariah and I will be your guide on this adventure. The year is 2120. West Texas is now a mass producer of green energy. Years and years ago, the Earth was pollution ridden and jeopardized most life. It was then decided it was time to make clean and conscious decisions. Green energy is now the “it” industry and is required by the country that everything be powered with it. I am a lead state inspector of green energy farms. Me and my team travel through the area each quarter to make sure the farms are following code. In this tour you are free to roam to any spot you want. So, go forth. If you want to go to the farthest spot go. No matter where you go, I will be ready to tell you the story behind it all.
