McMaster in 2011

In March of 2017 there was chaos in the acoustic community on the McMaster University campus. Dr. Jordan Peterson, a man speaking in favor of free speech, was denied his platform by a mob asserting their free speech over his. A setting for discourse, for the exchange of ideas, was replaced by a hostile environment by a group that claims to be about openness and tolerance. I have placed Peterson’s voice to the space from which it was stripped three years ago. I did so not to reassert his political views, but to pass along a piece of wisdom from one of his lectures on an ancient Egyptian myth. A piece of wisdom that all should hear. A piece of wisdom that would otherwise fall on many deaf ears as a result of the unjust smearing of Jordan Peterson’s name. ***Walk at a regular speed around IAHS. Welcome to our soundwalk. We are going to explore the sounds of both busy and quiet environments across various spaces on McMaster Campus. The purpose of this soundwalk is for participants to engage with the campus and the sounds that are heard, noticing the unique acoustic qualities of each space.

Just as students carry their classrooms with them across campus through mobile practices and technology, this sound walk will be taking you across various spaces, exposing you to different locations where extending learning beyond the traditional classroom is possible. Throughout this soundwalk, you will be discovering diverse study spots, with unique atmospheres, where students find themselves focused and productive.
