Audio-Cartographic Experiments Vol#1: Rise & Fall is Kit Monteith's debut solo album, released in January 2021. Recorded entirely on an iPhone 6s, the album is designed to be listened to in a single sitting, it’s 23 tracks blending continuously to unfurl the story of a unique journey around the world. Monteith performs as a percussionist with the band Foals and he composed and recorded this album during their 2019 world tour. In each of the cities the band performed he would make field recordings of the spaces and streets they visited, whilst on each flight composing musical pieces on his phone. When ordered together these two elements conspire to form an Audio-Cartographic record of an extraordinary journey. A world tour with one of the biggest modern bands, sonically reimagined to capture and explain its strange blur of sensations; the aches, pains, loneliness & exhilaration of endless travel along with the glimmers of truth & euphoria found hidden amongst it all. By appearing on the Echoes App, Monteith invites listeners to experience the journey afresh by taking their own walk through the album and add another layer to the Audio-Cartographic experiment. Listeners can re-order the journey themselves, take new routes around the world and experience Monteith's flight-scapes & field recordings in an order entirely dictated by their own movement through space.

Inspired by Stories, Mystery and Love, three short stories by Sophie Herxheimer, Hanan Issa, and Joelle Taylor, we invited community groups to respond to their neighbourhood and create an interactive sound walk, produced by sound artist and composer Sara Wolff. Working with Asylum Link, Capeesh and Damien John Kelly House, artists Dan Astles, Phoebe McSweeney and PJ Smith worked closely with their groups to think about moments and memories when they felt like Wavertree and Picton became their home, how they are guided by their favourite places and the times they felt loved living in the neighbourhood. After collecting voicenotes and recorded poems, Sara mapped the memories across the Picton and Wavertree neighbourhood on Echoes, a mobile application for immersive audio for specific locations. How to listen to the Soundwalk - Soundwalks are best experienced using a handheld device. - Make sure your Location Services are switched on, and that the Echoes app has permissions to use them. - Wear headphones. If they have a noise cancellation feature, make sure to turn this off – both for your safety and also so you can hear some of the sounds of the environment as you walk. - Please be aware of your surroundings, and take care when crossing roads. - Children must be supervised by an adult at all times - Please be kind and aware of people and their right to privacy when using the soundwalk, as locations are in public spaces. - Transcriptions are available - click on each Echo to view - Take as much time as you need!

This sound walk is a collection of fragments from artists Dan Waine and Mali Draper’s collaborative practice, combining immersive sound design and storytelling. “The moments from the night on the island are disjunct in the way that they sit in my head. Actually, on second thought they don’t sit, they bounce. I sat on the edge of a wall that surrounded a car park. The sky was much darker by this point, even the clouds were indistinct. They had dissolved into the indigo inkiness that hung above me. The red lights revealed themselves once again. On, two, three, four, five, six, seven, off…” The story centres around a character who accidentally gets trapped on an uninhabited island for an evening. The narrator finds themselves isolated without contact to the rest of the world, though still in view of the mainland over the body of water that separates them. A recurring focal point of the narrative is a mysterious red light that comes and goes, which ignites curiosity in the narrator, pulling them in and out of a dream-like progression throughout. The thoughts of the narrator may be shared with the audience, their fragmented and buffering nature feel very much like being put on pause; the lingering between one moment and another. Due to COVID-19 this work has been adapted from what was originally planned to be an indoor, interactive installation at OUTPUT gallery. Dan and Mali have dissected their work into 18 soundscapes, forming a sound walk located in Princes Park, Liverpool so that the work can be accessed by the public in a safe way.

Voices on the Streets is a collection of original poems and conversations about Liverpool’s places, people, culture and history. These pieces were created by local community groups as responses to research from the University of Liverpool’s English Department into topics such as migration, poetry, environment and identity. Each location a small stories attached to it which allows the listener to also get a tour of the history of the Georgian Quarter.
